Russia Announces Victory Day Ceasefire in Ukraine but Warns of Response to Disruptions
Moscow, May 07 (QNA) - Russia has announced a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine from May 8 to 10 coinciding celebrations marking Victory Day, one of the country's most important national holidays commemorating the Soviet Union's role in World War Two.
In a statement released on Thursday, the ministry of defense said all Russian military formations involved in what Moscow calls its "special military operation" had been ordered to fully suspend combat operations during the period.
The ministry added that Russian forces would halt strikes on Ukrainian military positions along the front lines for the duration of the ceasefire.
However, Moscow also warned that it would launch what it described as a "massive missile strike" on central Kyiv if Ukrainian authorities attempted to disrupt Victory Day celebrations in the Russian capital on May 9.
Russia called on Ukraine to observe the truce, describing it as an opportunity to demonstrate readiness for peace and to stop further bloodshed.
Victory Day is a major annual event in Russia, marked by military parades and ceremonies honoring the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in 1945. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, the commemorations have taken on heightened political and symbolic significance. (QNA)
