At Least 28 Dead, 10 Injured in Afghanistan Floods
Kabul, May 23 (QNA) - At least 28 people are confirmed dead and 10 others injured in the past 48 hours due to heavy rains, floods, landslides, and lightning strikes that have affected 17 provinces in Afghanistan.
The Afghan National Disaster Preparedness Authority said in a statement today that the severe weather has caused widespread material damage, including the complete or partial destruction of approximately 9,000 homes, in addition to significant losses of property, infrastructure, and agricultural land in several affected areas.
According to the authority, various natural disasters since March 26 have resulted in 285 deaths and 354 injuries.
For its part, the Meteorological Department of the Ministry of Transport and Aviation warned of continued rainfall and the possibility of further flooding in the coming days, particularly in the northern, northeastern, and central regions of the country.
Local officials in Baghlan province reported that floods severed fiber optic lines, disrupting communication services. Security forces in some provinces deployed military vehicles and helicopters to evacuate and rescue residents trapped in the affected areas.
Residents in the affected provinces described the humanitarian situation as dire, noting that the floods swept away homes and livestock and caused widespread damage to roads and farmland.
Afghanistan frequently experiences devastating floods and landslides, particularly during the spring and summer months. These events result in casualties and widespread damage to homes, infrastructure, and farmland, especially in mountainous and rural areas with fragile infrastructure.
Experts link the increasing frequency of extreme weather events in Afghanistan to climate change. Although the country is among the lowest contributors to global carbon emissions, it is among the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change due to decades of conflict, weak infrastructure, and a deteriorating economy, in addition to the severe earthquakes and floods it has experienced in recent years.
