Mogadishu, May 15 (QNA) - The Somali army said at least 50 members of the Al Qaeda-linked Al Shabaab group, including senior commanders, were killed in a military operation in the south-west of the country.
According to the Somali armed forces, the operation was launched in response to an attack carried out by armed fighters on the outskirts of the city of Baidoa on Friday morning, targeting security forces.
The military said the operation was aimed at pursuing those responsible for the assault and dismantling militant positions in the area.
Somalia's Ministry of Defense also expressed condolences to the families of soldiers killed while repelling the attack, praising what it described as their sacrifice in defending the country.
In a statement, the ministry stressed that authorities would not tolerate any group using violence to pursue political objectives or undermine national security.  (QNA)
