Doha, May 11 (QNA) - Qatar's Public Works Authority, Ashghal, has announced the completion of the second package of a major roads and infrastructure development project in the Al Kharaitiyat and Izghawa areas, as part of a wider plan aimed at supporting urban growth and improving services for residents.
According to Ashghal, the completed works will serve 1,514 residential plots through the construction and upgrading of internal roads designed to improve traffic movement and strengthen connections with surrounding main roads.
The authority said the project also included extensive infrastructure works, such as stormwater drainage systems and utility networks, intended to enhance living standards and provide integrated services for the growing communities.
Eng. Abdullah Al Nuaimi, Head of the Northern Areas Section at Ashghal's Roads Projects Department, said the wider development plan for Al Kharaitiyat and Izghawa is divided into four main packages that will ultimately serve 5,384 residential plots.
He added that the third package had already been completed earlier in 2025, covering 1,383 plots, while work on the remaining first and fourth packages is continuing.
Project engineer Eng. Jassim Kano said Package 2 included the construction of around 46km of roads fitted with traffic safety measures, including signals and road signage. The project also delivered three signal-controlled intersections and four pedestrian crossings to improve road safety and traffic flow.
Further works included the installation of 2,643 lighting poles and nearly 9,900 parking spaces, alongside landscaping and green spaces covering 37,500 square meters.
Ashghal also built approximately 85km of shared pedestrian and cycling paths, in a move the authority said was aimed at encouraging healthier lifestyles and improving the area's urban environment.
Infrastructure upgrades carried out under the project included 51km of surface and groundwater drainage networks, 21km of treated water pipelines, and 6.6km of potable water networks. Additional works involved the installation of 24.4km of electricity lines and 7.3km of communications infrastructure.
Ashghal said local manufacturers and materials accounted for around 70% of the supplies used in the project, including lighting equipment, drainage pipes, electrical cables and paving materials.
The authority said the approach supports Qatar's local industry and aligns with Ashghal's "Taheel Initiative", launched in 2017 to promote the use of local products in public projects. (QNA)
