Sanya 2026 Asian Beach Games: All-Qatari Showdown in Men's Beach Volleyball Round of 16 Tomorrow
Sanya/China, April 25 (QNA) - The Round of 16 competitions in men's beach volleyball at the Sanya 2026 Asian Beach Games will feature an all-Qatari clash on Sunday.
Qatar's first team, comprising Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan, will face the second Qatari team of Mohamed Ihab and Mousa Al Khair for a place in the quarterfinals.
The first Qatari team topped Group B after defeating Iran 2-1 today (21-11, 21-23, 15-13).
Meanwhile, Qatar's second team finished second in Group A following a 0-2 loss to host nation China, setting up the clash with their compatriots.
In the women's competition, Qatar's first team, consisting of Haya Abu Issa and Laila Mohammed, concluded their campaign after a 0-2 defeat to China, exiting from the group stage.
In beach handball, Qatar will take on Thailand on Sunday in a key preliminary round match, aiming to secure qualification to the semifinals and continue their title defense.
Qatar opened their campaign with victories over Pakistan and Oman, then extended their winning streak with wins against Bangladesh and Mongolia, before strengthening their lead in the group with a victory over Jordan, collecting 10 points from five consecutive wins.
In 3x3 basketball, Qatar's men's team began their campaign strongly with two wins in the preliminary round, defeating Bahrain 21-11 in their opening game and Kazakhstan 22-15 in their second, boosting their chances of advancing.
On the other hand, the women's team suffered a 5-21 loss to China in their opening match against one of the tournament's top contenders.
In sailing, Qatar continues its participation at Sanya 2026, with Tamim Shams competing in races six and seven of the boys' Optimist class, while Thani Shams takes part in races six and seven of the ILCA 4 category.
Sailing events are held under a cumulative scoring system, where all competitors take part in every race. Final standings are determined based on the total results across the ten scheduled races, which continue until next Tuesday, requiring consistent performance throughout the competition. (QNA)
