New York, April 22 (QNA) – The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) announced that it has launched a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of one of its soldiers, who was seriously wounded in an incident in southern Lebanon on April 18.

In a statement on Wednesday, UNIFIL urged the Lebanese government to expedite its own investigation to identify the perpetrators and hold them accountable for the crimes committed against its peacekeepers.

UNIFIL reiterated its reminder to all parties of their obligations under international law to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property at all times, emphasizing that deliberate attacks against peacekeepers constitute grave violations of international humanitarian law and Security Council Resolution 1701, and may amount to war crimes.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced earlier today the death of a second French soldier serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), who succumbed to wounds sustained in southern Lebanon.

It should be noted that a French soldier was killed, and three others were wounded last Saturday in an attack targeting UNIFIL in southern Lebanon. (QNA)
