5.9-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Indonesia
Jakarta, April 19 (QNA) An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck on Sunday western Indonesia.
Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the earthquake occurred 48 km west-northwest of the Nias region, off Sumatra Island, at a depth of 10 km.
Indonesia lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where numerous tectonic plates meet, resulting in frequent volcanic and seismic activity.
In 2004, a 9.1-magnitude earthquake struck Aceh province, triggering a tsunami that killed more than 170,000 people in Indonesia. (QNA)
