"La Menina" Sculpture Unveiled at Old Doha Port, Celebrating Qatar's Maritime Identity
Doha, February 15 (QNA) - Old Doha Port has unveiled the renowned "La Menina" sculpture by Spanish artist Antonio Azzato, executed artistically by Qatari artist Muna Al Bader.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by HE Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain to the State of Qatar Alvaro Renedo Zalba and Chief Executive Officer of Old Doha Port Eng. Mohammed Abdullah Al Mulla.
In a statement on Sunday, the port said the sculpture draws inspiration from the historic painting Las Meninas by Spanish artist Diego Velazquez, reflecting Spain's rich artistic heritage while reinterpreting the traditional concept through a contemporary creative vision.
It noted that "La Menina" was historically associated with the strength of the Spanish monarchy and the flourishing of Spain's Golden Age, before evolving into a modern symbol of cultural identity and pride in national heritage.
The statement added that at Old Doha Port, the sculpture acquires a distinctive local dimension: its blue design embodies the State of Qatar's deep-rooted historical connection to the sea, while the flowing decorative motifs inspired by the flags of Qatar and Spain symbolize dialogue and cultural exchange between the two countries.
The statement further noted that internationally, "La Menina" serves as a traveling cultural ambassador for Spain, adapting to the character of each host country while preserving its Spanish roots.
This balance between global presence and local dimension contributes to building an artistic and cultural bridge that strengthens ties between Qatar and Spain, granting the artwork a universal character infused with an authentic local touch. (QNA)
