New York, February 13 (QNA) - Members of the United Nations Security Council on Friday called on the parties in South Sudan to exercise restraint and resolve outstanding issues through dialogue, stressing that international law allows for the accountability of individuals who order the commission of war crimes.

In a statement, Council members urged all parties to de-escalate tensions, immediately cease renewed hostilities, and address disputes through peaceful dialogue. They expressed deep concern over the escalating violence in Jonglei State, Eastern Equatoria, and other parts of the country.

The Council also called on South Sudan's Transitional Government to continue its full cooperation with the United Nations, underscoring that ongoing violations of the peace agreement undermine stability, exacerbate humanitarian needs, and place additional strain on the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in carrying out its mandate.

Members emphasized the importance of sustained cooperation between the host government and the UN mission to maintain peace and stability, facilitate safe and timely humanitarian access, and ensure the protection of civilians. They reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the peace process in South Sudan and to working in partnership with the Transitional Government to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region.

The Council further called on South Sudanese leaders to engage in genuine dialogue regarding potential amendments to the 2018 peace agreement through an inclusive and transparent process.

In January, the United Nations Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan expressed concern over the deteriorating situation in Jonglei State, warning that recent developments significantly increase the risk of mass violence against civilians and threaten to undermine the peace agreement. (QNA)
