UEFA Champions League: Paris Saint-Germain Target Fourth Straight Win Against Villarreal
Paris, November 02 (QNA) - Attention turns to the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, as Paris Saint-Germain, champions in each of the past two seasons, travel to Spain to face Villarreal, seeking a fourth consecutive victory in the competition.
PSG head into the encounter on the back of impressive results both in Europe and at home. The French side have won the Champions League in each of the past two seasons and currently lead Ligue 1 by two points over Lille, following a resounding 5-1 away victory over Le Havre in the latest round.
The French club will be looking to extend their impressive European record after going unbeaten in their last 13 Champions League matches, recording nine wins and four draws. The run equals the club's longest unbeaten streak in the competition, previously achieved between the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons.
Villarreal, meanwhile, head into the match amid inconsistent results in La Liga, where they sit eighth. The Spanish side have recorded one win and two defeats in their previous three Champions League matches. Tuesday's encounter will be the first meeting between the two clubs in European competition.
In one of the round's standout fixtures, Atlético Madrid host German giants Bayern Munich in a clash between two sides competing for domestic and continental honors.
Atlético go into the match in high spirits after securing their seventh consecutive La Liga victory, while Bayern will be looking to return to winning ways in the Champions League. The German side opened their campaign with a commanding 5-0 victory over Norway's Bodø/Glimt before drawing 3-3 with Norway's Viking and 2-2 with England's Arsenal.
Bayern hold the edge in recent meetings between the sides, having avoided defeat in their last three encounters with Atlético. The German club have also recorded four wins in eight previous meetings, although they have failed to beat the Spanish side in their three previous visits to Spain.
The German side have suffered another injury setback after Moroccan international Ismael Saibari sustained an ankle injury during the match against Borussia Dortmund. Serge Gnabry and Michael Olise are also doubts for the encounter, while Jamal Musiala and Colombian international Luis Díaz continue their recovery from injury.
Attention will also be focused on English striker Harry Kane, who has scored in each of his last 10 Champions League appearances. He needs a goal against Atlético to equal the competition record held by Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored in 11 consecutive Champions League matches for Real Madrid between 2017 and 2018.
In another fixture, Barcelona host England's Aston Villa, looking to bounce back from their 4-2 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain and build on their positive domestic form following a resounding 6-1 victory over Alavés in La Liga. The win lifted Barcelona back to the top of the standings with 30 points.
Aston Villa, meanwhile, arrive having won all their previous Champions League matches, making them one of five clubs to have collected the maximum number of points in the competition so far.
Real Madrid also travel to Greece to face AEK Athens, seeking a fourth consecutive Champions League victory and looking to extend their winning run across all competitions to six matches.
Real Madrid beat Racing Santander 3-0 in their latest La Liga outing, while AEK Athens go into the encounter following a 2-0 defeat by Panathinaikos in the Greek league. The Greek side sit 29th in the Champions League standings with three points.
The two clubs have met four times in European competition, with each recording one victory and the other two matches ending in draws. Their most recent encounters came in the 2003 Champions League group stage, when the first leg in Athens ended 3-3 before the return match in Madrid finished 2-2. (QNA)
