Palestinian President Issues Decree to Hold Presidential Polls in September 2027
Ramallah, October 10 (QNA) - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday issued a presidential decree calling for synchronous presidential and legislative elections to be staged on Sept. 11, 2027, pursuant to a decision by the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), following the scrapping of Decree No. (4) of 2026, which had called for legislative elections to be held on Nov. 28, 2026.
As per the decree, Palestinians in Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip will participate in these polls to elect the President and members of the Legislative Council simultaneously, in conformity with the provisions of the law.
According to the Palestinian News Agency (WAFA), the decree was issued pursuant to the decision of the PLO's Executive Committee, following national consultations with the Palestinian political forces and factions, along with a national accord that grew out of these consultations.
The consensus cited the obstacles imposed by Israeli actions to the feasibility of conducting these polls on their previously scheduled date, and underscored the importance of having appropriate political, security and field conditions in place to stage free, fair and comprehensive elections. (QNA)
