US President Pledges Wave of Tariffs on Eight European Countries
Washington, January 17 (QNA) - US President Donald Trump on Saturday pledged to implement a wave of increasing tariffs on eight European countries until the United States is allowed to purchase Greenland.
"Additional 10 percent import tariffs will take effect on February 1 on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, and Finland", Trump posted on Truth Social, adding that these tariffs will rise to 25 percent on June 1 and will continue until a deal is reached allowing the United States to purchase the island.
Trump has not ruled out the use of military force to take control of the autonomous territory of Greenland, which enjoys autonomous rule and belongs to Denmark, because of its profound significance to the US security by virtue of strategic location and abundant mineral resources.
This has prompted several European countries to send limited numbers of military personnel to the island in recent days at Denmark's request, a move Trump described as a very dangerous game that has placed them in a position that is not tenable or sustainable. (QNA)
