Moscow, August 31 (QNA) - A magnitude 5.5 earthquake jolted the Kamchatka region in the Russian Far East Saturday, with no immediate reports of damage or human casualties, the local branch of the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Kamchatka confirmed.

It further indicated that the earthquake's epicenter was located 426 kilometers from the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at a depth of 30.8 kilometers.

Kamchatka Peninsula was struck on Jul. 30 by a magnitude 8.8 earthquake, the strongest recorded in the region since 1952.

Since then, scientists have been monitoring aftershocks in this geologically active area almost daily, with some registering a magnitude of up to 6.5. (QNA)
