Zanzibar, August 24 (QNA) - Sudan secured a spot in the semifinals of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) for locally based players after defeating Algeria 4-2 on penalties in Saturday's quarterfinal match. The tournament is currently being hosted across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania and runs through August 30.

The match ended 1-1 after regulation and extra time. Sudan took the lead early in the second half when Algerian defender Ayoub Ghezala inadvertently scored an own goal in the 48th minute. Algeria equalized in the 73rd minute through Sofiane Bayazid, forcing the game into a shootout, where Sudan prevailed.

Sudan will face Madagascar in the semifinals. Madagascar advanced on Friday after beating Kenya 4-3 on penalties, following a 1-1 draw.

In another quarterfinal, Senegal edged Uganda 1-0 thanks to a 62nd-minute goal from Omar Ba. Senegal will meet Morocco in the semifinals, after the North African side defeated Tanzania 1-0 on Friday.

The semifinal matches are scheduled for Tuesday, with the third-place playoff set for August 29 and the final on August 30. (QNA)
