Tokyo, June 02 (QNA) – An earthquake measuring 6.3 magnitude on the Richter scale struck the eastern coast of Japan’s Hokkaido Prefecture Monday.

The epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 27 km, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported.

There have been no reports of casualties or material loss due to the earthquake so far.

Japan is located at the intersection of four tectonic plates, which makes it particularly vulnerable to seismic activity. It is also home to 100 active volcanoes.

A 9.0-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami in 2011 killed more than 15,000 people and caused a disaster at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. (QNA)
