S. Korea Expresses Concern Over China's Establishment of No-Sail Zone in Overlapping Waters
Seoul, May 25 (QNA) - South Korea's Foreign Ministry expressed concern over China's announcement of a no-sail zone in the Yellow Sea, noting that the Chinese move could constitute an excessive restriction on freedom of navigation in the area.
A ministry official quoted South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff as saying that both countries are permitted to conduct military exercises in the Provisional Measures Zone, an area where the two countries' exclusive economic zones overlap.
However, the official added that China's establishment of a no-sail zone within the Provisional Measures Zone, which excessively restricts freedom of navigation, is concerning. He added that these concerns have been conveyed to Beijing through diplomatic channels.
He explained that the ministry is closely coordinating with the Ministry of Defense and other relevant authorities to examine the extent to which the Chinese action complies with the provisions of international maritime law.
The official stressed that the South Korean government will continue to work with relevant ministries to ensure the protection of the country's legitimate rights and interests.
Earlier this week, US media reported that China had unilaterally declared a no-sail zone in the disputed waters of the Yellow Sea, coinciding with the installation of three structures which it claims are "aquaculture facilities." (QNA)
