ITTF World Table Tennis Championships Finals - Doha 2025 Concludes Astonishingly
Doha, May 25 (QNA) - The ITTF World Table Tennis Championships Finals - Doha 2025 wrapped up on Sunday.
HE President of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani, HE President of the International Olympic Committee Dr. Thomas Bach, and President of the International Table Tennis Federation Petra Sorling attended the final day's action of the ITTF World Table Tennis Championships Finals - Doha 2025, along with a number of dignitaries and senior representatives of the Olympic and sports movement from across Asia and beyond.
The ninth and final day featured four exciting finals across the men's and women's singles and doubles categories:
The Men's Singles: World No. 2 Wang Chuqin of China claimed the title after defeating World No. 3 Hugo Calderano of Brazil 4-1 in the final, winning the gold medal and championship trophy, while Calderano took the silver and China's Liang Jingkun and Sweden's Truls Moregardh shared the bronze.
With this win, Wang Chuqin secured the eighth major title of his career, while Calderano missed the opportunity to win his first World Championship title.
The Women's Singles: Olympic champion and World No. 1 Sun Yingsha successfully defended her title by defeating her compatriot and World No. 2 Wang Manyu 4-3 in a repeat of the 2021 final in Houston.
Yingsha won the gold medal and championship trophy, while Manyu took silver. As for the bronze medals, they went to Japan's Mima Ito and China's Chen Xingtong.
With this victory, Sun Yingsha also celebrated her eighth career World Championship title, whereas Wang Manyu missed out on what would have been her seventh.
The Men's Doubles: Japanese duo of Hiroto Shinozuka and Shunsuke Togami, ranked No. 2 globally, won the title after defeating the sixth-ranked Chinese Taipei pair Chen Chien-An and Lin Yun-Ju 3-2 in the final. The Japanese team took home the gold medals and championship trophy. The Chinese Taipei pair earned silver, while two French duos of Florian Bourrassaud and Esteban Dorr, and Felix and Alexis Lebrun - shared the bronze.
The Women's Doubles: The Chinese pair Wang Manyu and Chen Meng, ranked second worldwide, claimed the title after defeating the 10th-ranked team of Austria's Sofia Polcanova and Romania's Bernadette Szocs 3-0 in the final.
The Chinese duo earned the gold medals and trophy, while the Austrian-Romanian pair took silver. The Bronze medals went to the Japanese duo Miwa Harimoto and Miyuu Kihara, and the South Korean pair Shin Yubin and Ryu Hanna.
At the wrap up of the championship, HE Secretary General of QOC and Vice President of the Doha 2025 Organizing Committee Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain, joined by HE President of the International Olympic Committee Dr. Thomas Bach, Tournament Director Khalil Al Mohannadi, and President of the International Table Tennis Federation Petra Sorling, in awarding the winners with medals and championship trophies.
Khalil Al Mohannadi and Petra Sorling also handed over the World Table Tennis Championship flag to Chair of Table Tennis England Clare Briegal, as England is set to host the next edition of the championship in 2026.
Chinese duo Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha were crowned champions of the mixed doubles event on Saturday, after defeating the Japanese pair Maharu Yoshimura and Satsuki Odo with a score of 3–1 in the final.
China dominated the ITTF World Table Tennis Championships Finals – Doha 2025, winning four out of five titles: men's singles, women's singles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles, with the only non-Chinese title going to Japan, which won the men's doubles title.
World No. 2 Wang Chuqin expressed his delight after winning the men's singles title at Doha 2025, just one day after clinching the mixed doubles title with teammate Sun Yingsha.
In the post-final press conference, Wang expressed satisfaction with his result, saying that the World Championship is like a marathon, where one must give their everything in every match and stay focused at all times.
Wang added that it is a true test of perseverance and endurance, which is not easy, yet he managed to do it and win.
For her part, Sun Yingsha, the world’s top-ranked player, expressed her happiness after winning the women's singles title, also just a day after securing the mixed doubles title with Wang Chuqin.
In her post-match remarks, Sun said that she had entered the final fully focused and that she tried to enjoy the game throughout the tournament no matter how strong the opponent was.
She noted that this title would be a major motivator for her future competitions and that she would return to China ready to prepare thoroughly for upcoming events.
Yingsha added that the match was by no means easy and that she constantly tried to avoid being affected negatively and kept motivating myself, especially when she lost a point.
She added that she just kept thinking about the title, particularly during the deciding set in order to reach her goal. (QNA)
