Doha, May 14 (QNA) - The visit of His Excellency President of the United States Donald Trump to the State of Qatar constitutes a significant event, as it comes as part of his first foreign tour since assuming office in January.

It also marks the second visit by a US president to Qatar, following former President George W. Bush's visit in 2003.

This visit holds significant implications, reflecting the prominent status and strategic importance of the State of Qatar as a key partner of the United States and a trusted mediator in regional diplomacy, especially amid the critical challenges currently facing the Middle East and the world. The visit also underscores the special and distinguished relationship between the State of Qatar and the United States, which was further elevated when Washington designated Qatar a Major Non-NATO Ally in 2022. This designation reflects the US appreciation of the partnership and its commitment to enhancing cooperation with Qatar across various sectors.

President Trump's visit signals a promising new phase in the growing friendship and cooperation between the two countries in various fields, serving the interests of both peoples and supporting regional and global stability.

The annual US-Qatar Strategic Dialogue highlights the depth of bilateral ties and the high level of coordination between the two countries over the decades. It serves as an important platform to explore future cooperation and strengthen the relationship, especially as both sides seek greater alignment in addressing regional and international challenges.

Among the most pressing regional issues is the situation in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories. A noteworthy example of the cooperation between the State of Qatar and the US cooperated is when they worked, along with Egypt, to reach a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, stop the bloodshed, and ease the humanitarian suffering of the population.

Qatar consistently emphasizes in international forums the need to prioritize humanitarian aid for the Palestinian people, particularly as they face worsening conditions due to occupation, siege, and war, and as Israel continues to obstruct aid delivery. Qatar also calls for intensified humanitarian efforts for Gaza.

The United States appreciates Qatar's significant regional and international role, according to the HE Ambassador of the United States of America to the State of Qatar Timmy Davis. During the Global Security Forum held recently in Doha, he described Qatar as a trusted mediator in regional diplomacy and a key partner for the United States, affirming Washington's commitment to working closely with Doha on regional issues.

He also commended Qatar's leadership in Gaza ceasefire negotiations. In earlier statements, the US Ambassador noted the ever-expanding US-Qatar relationship, calling it a model for other countries seeking to build strong, mutually beneficial bilateral ties, and praised Qatar's major efforts in promoting peace and resolving conflicts globally.

US political circles have long emphasized the strong and historic ties between Qatar and the United States, built on cooperation in politics, economics, trade, culture, and education, among other areas. The close coordination between the two countries also extends beyond bilateral matters to include collaboration on regional and global issues such as regional security, climate change, and economic challenges.

March 19, 1972, stands as a milestone in the history of growing cooperation, alliance, and partnership between the State of Qatar and the United States, as it marks the dateآ diplomatic relations were officially established between the two countries, though the historical roots of informal relations between them go back several decades further.

The strategic partnership between the two countries continues to develop year after year, growing more robust in the pursuit of common interests for both people. This partnership also contributes to maintaining security and peace for the people of the region and the world, particularly given the commitment of both countries’ leaderships to promoting security and prosperity in the Gulf and the Middle East, ensuring the stability of global energy supplies, and enhancing trade and investment cooperation.

Qatari-American relations have evolved beyond mere cooperation into a strong alliance and solid partnership, especially since the launch of the first US-Qatar Strategic Dialogue in 2018. The regular convening of this dialogue between Doha and Washington affirms both countries’ strong commitment to enhancing collaboration, tracking the implementation of agreed initiatives, building on achievements, and engaging in coordination and consultation on regional and global challenges, security, law enforcement, counter-terrorism, trade and investment, and various regional and international issues.

Qatar has always been keen on strengthening and expanding its growing partnership with the United States across various fields, striving to elevate it to even greater heights. A clear testament to this was Qatar’s success this past January in facilitating a prisoner exchange between the United States and Afghanistan. Qatari mediation led to the release of two American citizens held in Afghanistan in return for the release of an Afghan citizen detained in the United States. This once again confirms Qatar’s position as a trusted regional and international partner and highlights its active role in peacebuilding and in promoting regional and global security and stability.

As part of its continued efforts to strengthen ties with the United States and contribute to peace and stability in Afghanistan, Qatar also hosted the negotiations between the US and the Taliban, which culminated in the signing of an agreement between the two parties in 2020. That agreement was a significant and essential step toward ending a years-long war and opened the door to reconciliation among Afghan parties with the goal of establishing peace and stability in a country that has long suffered.

Qatar’s role in evacuating American citizens from Afghanistan, as well as its role in hosting the talks with the Taliban, was met with broad appreciation from the United States. The US administration expressed its gratitude and appreciation to Qatar for its role in promoting security and stability and for its efforts in the Afghan peace process.

For over 53 years, the State of Qatar and the United States have worked to strengthen and advance their bilateral relations in various fields, especially in economy, trade, and investment. Economic ties have flourished remarkably over the years, with Qatar investing billions of dollars in the US, while American investments are among the most significant in Qatar. Dozens of American companies operate in many key sectors in Qatar, particularly energy, information technology, and communications, contributing to the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.

Qatar and the United States aspire to further develop their strategic partnership across all levels and elevate it to new horizons, serving the interests of both peoples, supporting development and progress in both countries, and contributing to regional and global security and stability.
