Doha, May 12 (QNA) - With the impending launch of the ITTF World Table Tennis Championships Finals Doha 2025, the gaze of the global table tennis community is firmly fixed on the sport's foremost male and female contenders, those widely heralded as frontrunners for the coveted title in this landmark edition, which is set to host 640 outstanding athletes representing 127 nations, competing across five principal categories.

This edition will serve as a pivotal stage for a top-rung group of male and female athletes who have demonstrated their prowess across international, global, and Olympic platforms.

In the men’s category, Asian players are poised as the most formidable contenders, spearheaded by Lin Shidong, the 20-year-old Chinese prodigy, hailed as a generational phenomenon for his sharp tactical intellect and unmatched ability to destabilize opponents.

Lin stands out as one of the foremost title contenders, having secured the Mixed Doubles bronze medal at the 2023 World Championships in Durban, captured the Men’s Singles crown at the 2024 WTT China Smash in Chengdu, and achieved a historic triple title at the 2025 Singapore Smash, where he triumphed in Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles.

He is also a two-time Asian Champion and, as of February 2025, holds the distinction of being the youngest-ever world No. 1 in men’s table tennis, as officially recognized by the ITTF, underscoring his quest to consolidate his dominance on the global stage.

Alongside him is his compatriot and Olympic gold medalist Wang Chuqin, currently ranked world No. 2, who captured the Men’s Team gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, followed by two gold medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics, in Mixed Doubles and the Men’s Team event.

Wang is also a seven-time World Champion, with titles secured in Halmstad 2018, Budapest 2019, Houston 2021, Chengdu 2022, and Durban 2023, where he snagged gold in both Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles, and Busan 2024.

His international dominance is further evidenced by three World Cup victories, Chengdu 2023, Chengdu 2024, and Macau 2025, in addition to two Asian Championship titles, earned in 2023 and 2024.

Brazilian participation will be spearheaded by Hugo Calderano, the world No. 3 and a rising phenomenon, who holds the historic distinction of being the first South American player to enter the top ten of the global rankings. Calderano has amassed nine titles in the singles category and two in doubles and clinched the Men’s World Cup title in Macau 2025—a landmark victory that cemented his place among the sport’s elite.

His competitive record is further buttressed by a series of continental and national championships, underscoring his emergence as a trailblazing figure in the Latin American table tennis sphere.

Representing Japan is Tomokazu Harimoto, currently ranked world No. 4, who brings to the championship his trademark explosive speed and powerful forehand drives. His competitive track record includes a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, a silver at the 2021 World Championships in Houston, a bronze at the 2022 edition in Chengdu, and a silver at the 2023 Championships in Durban.

Harimoto has also snagged two silver medals and two bronze medals at the ITTF World Cup, across the 2018, 2019, 2023, and 2024 editions, further solidifying his role as Japan’s principal contender on the global circuit.

Among the participants are Liang Jingkun (world No. 5), a two-time World Champion, World Cup winner, and three-time Asian Champion, and Felix Lebrun (world No. 6), who claimed double bronze at Paris 2024, a World silver, European gold, and four national titles.

The championship is anticipated to feature fierce matchups between China and Japan in the team category, with Japan, spearheaded by rising talents such as Tomokazu Harimoto and Miwa Harimoto, poised to mount a serious challenge to China’s enduring supremacy.

Concurrently, a new generation of contenders from Africa and Latin America, namely Omar Assar of Egypt and Hugo Calderano of Brazil, may well upend the traditional hierarchy and recalibrate the competitive balance. The German delegation, long regarded as a formidable European force, will place its trust in the veteran acumen of Dimitrij Ovtcharov, the former world No. 1 and currently ranked 24th globally, whose experience is expected to serve as a strategic anchor in Germany’s pursuit of podium finishes.

In the women’s singles bracket, Chinese players dominate the top seedings, led by Sun Yingsha, the world No. 1 and the overwhelming favorite to clinch the title.

A commanding presence in the sport, Sun boasts a stellar career highlighted by Olympic gold medals at Tokyo 2020 (team) and Paris 2024 (mixed doubles and team), seven World Championship titles, including 2019 (women’s doubles), 2021 (women’s and mixed doubles), 2022 (team), 2023 (singles and mixed doubles), and 2024 (team), five World Cup victories, spanning 2019 (team), 2023 (mixed team), 2024 (singles and mixed team), and 2025 (singles), and three Asian Championship titles in 2019 (singles and team) and 2023 (team), all of which reinforce her unrivaled supremacy on the global table tennis stage.

Alongside her, stands compatriot Wang Manyu, ranked world No. 2, renowned for her aggressive style and deep international pedigree. A six-time World Champion (2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2024), Wang also holds Olympic team golds from Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, two World Cup titles (2023, 2024 – mixed team), three Asian Games golds (Jakarta 2018 – singles and team, Hangzhou 2022 – team), and four Asian Championship titles, cementing her place among the sport’s most dominant figures.

China’s top-seeded roster also features Chen Xingtong (world No. 3), a two-time World Champion (Chengdu 2022, Busan 2024), World Cup winner (London 2018), Asian Games gold medalist (2018, 2022), and Asian Champion (2017, 2023). Alongside her is Wang Yidi (world No. 4), a three-time World Champion (Chengdu 2022 – team, Durban 2023 – doubles, Busan 2024 – team), Asian Games gold medalist (Hangzhou 2022 – team), World Cup champion (Bangkok 2022), and Asian mixed doubles champion (2023), reinforcing China’s unmatched depth in the women’s field.

The championship is expected to feature intense matchups between China and Japan, with the latter led by four top-ranked players, namely Miwa Harimoto (world No. 6), Hina Hayata (No. 7), Satsuki Odo (No. 8), and Mima Ito (No. 9).

Meanwhile, South Korea and Chinese Taipei remain formidable contenders in both singles and team categories. The mixed doubles competition is also set to be highly competitive, particularly following its official inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The tournament will also feature notable participation from Arab nations, mostly Egypt, led by Omar Assar, the reigning African No. 1 and currently ranked 26th globally, who enters the tournament as a seasoned and formidable presence on the international stage.

Overall, host nation Qatar is aiming to deliver surprise results on home soil, with five male players and two female players set to compete, Sultan Khalid Al Kuwari and Mohamed Abdulwahab in the men’s singles, and Ayah Magdy and Maryam Ali in the women’s singles.

In the men’s doubles, Mohamed Abdulwahab and Abdullah Abdulwahab, as well as Sultan Al Kuwari and Rawad Al Nasser, will represent Qatar. Ayah Magdy and Maryam Ali will take part in the women’s doubles, while Mohamed Abdulwahab and Ayah Magdy, along with Ahmed Eid Qarni and Maryam Ali, are slated to compete in the mixed doubles. With the backing of a home crowd, Qatar is expected to deliver a respectable showing across all disciplines.

The spectators aspire to witness surprises that blend suspense with sportsmanship in a nation that has proven its capability of absolutely stunning the world.

Alongside the technical preparations, the organizing committee has remained committed to offering a sophisticated infrastructure to welcome thousands of fans and to securing transportation amenities, such as the Doha Metro and electric buses.

By organizing this tournament, Qatar reiterates its capability to host major events, having fully outfitted two major halls in Lusail and Qatar University with cutting-edge technologies to support players and spectators. (QNA)
