Addis Ababa, March 22 (QNA) - The Ethiopian army reported the killing of more than 300 Fano fighters during two days of clashes in the Amhara region.

The Ethiopian army revealed, in a statement, that the Fano armed group carried out attacks in various areas of Amhara under the name "Operation Unity." The army confirmed the elimination of 317 fighters and the injury of 125 others.

Clashes between the Ethiopian army and the Fano group initially erupted in July 2023, partly due to grievances among many Amharas over perceived breaches of the 2022 peace agreement.

Fano, an armed group that recruits local volunteers, was previously an ally of the Ethiopian army during the Tigray War. However, relations later deteriorated amid accusations that the federal government sought to weaken Amhara's defenses in favor of neighboring regions, a claim the government denies. (QNA)
