UN Anti-Corruption Convention Conference Highlights Importance of International Cooperation to Combat Sports Manipulation
Doha, December 15 (QNA) - Participants in a session of the 11th session of the Conference of the States Parties (COSP11) to the United Nations Convention against Corruption, currently being held in Doha, discussed a range of issues related to the development of international sports and enhancing cooperation among National Olympic Committees to combat all forms of manipulation in sports.
During the session, titled "Guide to Combating Manipulation in Sports," several leaders of the Olympic movement emphasized the importance of collaboration between national committees, regional organizations, and international bodies to ensure the integrity of competitions and protect athletes from any attempts at manipulation or corruption.
Participants highlighted that safeguarding sports integrity and protecting athletes is a top priority. They noted that organized crime targeting athletes requires effective preventive measures, including regulatory oversight, awareness-raising, and cooperation in gathering and exchanging information, stressing that all actors within the sports movement are obliged to comply with relevant international rules and regulations.
They also pointed out that cooperation between sports authorities and government institutions is essential for effectively combating sports corruption, emphasizing the vital role of law enforcement agencies, public prosecutors, and national legislation alongside sports organizations in achieving tangible results.
The session concluded with participants underlining that combating sports corruption requires a comprehensive approach involving all stakeholders, focusing on practical tools that can be applied on the ground to ensure integrity and credibility in sports. They also stressed the importance of information exchange between countries, developing technologies to monitor manipulation in sports betting, and enhancing the capacity of national bodies to ensure the effectiveness of international measures and recommendations.
