Brasilia, November 15 (QNA) - At the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belem, Brazil, the State of Qatar hosted a side event titled "Transparency in Action: Measurement, Reporting and Verification Systems for Effective Climate Action."

The session brought together international experts to discuss the development and application of advanced Monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) systems aligned with the enhanced transparency framework under the Paris Agreement.

The event highlighted several international experiences in building national MRV systems to strengthen data governance, improve institutional coordination and develop greenhouse gas emissions reports.

Speakers stressed the importance of accurate and transparent data to track progress toward nationally determined contributions and to support evidence‑based climate policies.

Participants included Mohammed Al Marri, head of MRV systems at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change; Gebru Jember Endalew, Africa regional director at the Global Green Growth Institute; Pietro Bertazzi, chief policy and projects officer at CDP; and Guilherme Canela de Souza Godoi, Director of UNESCO's Division for Digital Inclusion and Policies and Digital Transformation.

Al Marri said the national MRV project represents a key step in strengthening climate transparency and building institutional capacity.

He emphasized Qatar's commitment to collecting accurate data, enhancing verification processes, and achieving greater integration among national systems in line with international reporting requirements.

Discussions also addressed the importance of digital infrastructure, inter‑agency cooperation and access to environmental data.

The session linked MRV systems to Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration, Sustainable Development Goal 16.10.2, and the Escazu and Aarhus agreements, underscoring the role of access to information in promoting transparency and community partnership.

The event was part of a series organized by Qatar's pavilion at COP30 to exchange expertise, strengthen international cooperation and highlight leading initiatives in implementing the Paris Agreement and supporting sustainable climate action. (QNA)
