Mogadishu, October 05 (QNA) - Somali authorities said Saturday that security forces repelled an armed assault by Al Shabab militants on a key intelligence facility in the capital, Mogadishu, triggering a heavy exchange of gunfire and damage to parts of the compound.

The attack targeted the Godka Jilacow facility, which is operated by Somalia's National Intelligence and Security Agency. Officials said the assault began with a car bomb disguised as an agency vehicle, aimed at breaching the compound's defenses. A sweeping security operation remains underway to track down the attackers and secure the area.

Eyewitnesses reported a massive explosion followed by intense gunfire, with thick smoke rising from the site before reinforcements arrived to contain the attack.

Security officials confirmed ongoing operations against Al Shabab across the country, part of a broader campaign to dismantle the group and restore stability.

In a statement issued after the incident, Al Shabab claimed responsibility, saying its fighters used a suicide car bomb and ground assault to infiltrate the facility, resulting in casualties among government forces.

Somali forces have been battling Al Shabab for more than a decade. In recent months, they have regained control of several strategic areas in central and southern Somalia. (QNA)
